How to Thrive in Tough Times

In March 2020, my husband and I moved from the US to Australia. We have been looking forward to it for a year. In the morning, we would have a cup of coffee and plan our future in Australia. We talked about what job we would like to have, what suburb we would like to live in, what house we would like to buy, and a dog we would like to adopt from a shelter.

After 36 hours long journey, we finally landed at Perth airport. Our friends picked us up, and I was delighted to see them. We were finally home. Our dream life can begin …

… and then …

Coronavirus hit hard the whole world.

I didn’t see it coming.

No one saw it coming.

 

Our dreams and planes crashed in a second. The unemployment rate in Australia was 10% in April 2020. The highest since 1994. Six million Australians lost their jobs.

I finally understood that finding a job won’t be easy.

I don’t know how that would impact my business and income. The worst-case scenario can be that we have no income coming in at all.

And that scenario is authentic.

I know that you, too, have been through or are going through hard times. That’s the reason I wrote this blog post.

What do you do when a nightmare knocks on your door?

How do you feel when your dreams or plans collapse?

Feeling despair, fear, anxiety, overwhelm and panic in challenging situations is reasonable.

Here’s how I deal with challenging situations in my life.

 

 

#1 Habit: USE YOUR JOURNAL FOR SELF-CARE

 

Journaling is my go-to therapy. It helps me see my thoughts. So I was writing a lot about how our thoughts determine our emotions and actions, consequently, the outcome. Click here to learn more about how your thoughts can make or break your life.

 

I can hear you thinking …

… what do you journal about?

Well, I use different prompts, but here’s one you can try whenever you feel afraid, overwhelmed or under pressure. Ask yourself, “What am I feeling right now? How do I see my current situation?”

Write whatever comes into your mind. Don’t criticise your writing. Curse if you want to. Be who you are at that moment. Journal is a safe place. It won’t judge you. When you are done with writing, read what you wrote.

That will give you many insights into what’s going on inside you.

Journaling will provide you with a gift of clarity – always.

I want you to know that you have an option. You are not a victim of life circumstances. 

 

As Victor Franklin said: “Everything can be taken away from you, except the freedom to choose how you want to respond.”

 

 

 

#2 Habit: GET INSPIRED

 

You must raise your energy from feeling fearful and numb to feeling optimistic and calm.

You cannot make the right decision from the place of fear. It’s not possible. 

Every decision has to be made from a place of calm.

 

So, you’ve already journaled about what’s going on in your life, what your emotions and thoughts are. Now, it’s time to raise your energy.

#3 Habit: ADAPT TO THE SITUATION WITHOUT RESENTMENT

 

This one is the hardest one! But you can do it.

Okay, now that you know what’s going on inside you and you pumped yourself up, it’s time to focus on what you have control over and what’s the solution.

Now, this is important!

Your thoughts determine your feelings and emotions.

Your emotions determine your decisions.

Your decisions determine your outcome.

 

Grab your journal again and ask yourself, “What can I control? What can’t I control? What kind of person do I want to be? What is the best solution to my problem right now?”

The solution is simple!

Focus on what you can control

Tear down the list of things that you can’t control and let them go

 

Here’s how to connect with your heart so that you can become the best version of yourself. You can make this your morning routine.

  • Visualise your goals every single day. That will stimulate your brain to look for solutions and keep you inspired.
  • Focus on what you can control and let go of what you can’t control. That will help you focus on the solution.
  • Every day write down your blessings and the qualities you admire in yourself. That will help you take care of yourself, especially when times are not glorious.

Wherever you focus goes, your energy flows.
